CAMBRIDGE, MA, USA and PATRAS, GREECE – Advent Technologies participated in the CARISMA 2019 Conference, in Duisburg, Germany from August 27th to August 30th. The conference brought together the leading scientists and companies from all over the world who lead innovation in the field of high-temperature PEM (HT-PEM) fuel cells. Advancements in membranes, electrodes, bipolar plates and systems that relate to HT-PEM were presented.
The field of high-temperature fuel cells has gained momentum recently given the ability of these systems to use liquid and other fuels instead of hydrogen to generate electricity. Methanol, natural gas, liquid propane, dimethyl ether (DME) and other biofuels are available choices for the automobile, shipping, drone, portable and stationary power market. The conference showcased applications in all of these industries. Of particular attention are the recent efforts of Chinese automobile manufacturers to employ HT-PEM systems as range-extenders for the automobile industry.
Dr. Emory DeCastro, Advent Technologies Chief Technology Officer, presented advancements in next-generation MEAs (membrane electrode assemblies) that can significantly reduce cost and weight of the systems that the industry needs. In addition, the new materials promise to achieve even greater lifetime targets. MEAs are considered the “heart of the fuel cell” and further advancements in this field would increase the addressable market of HT-PEM immediately. Dr. De Castro remarked “These next generation materials offer a remarkable gain in stability at a much higher power output than considered achievable.”
Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou, Advent Technologies Chief Executive Officer, stated: “We have multiple efforts underway to bring to the market the best MEAs at the most affordable volume prices. We are actively interested in collaboration with other leading institutions and complementary industry players to help grow this market. We believe that HT-PEM can provide the missing piece in the electrification revolution especially in the automotive sector. Liquid fuels are going to be part of the mix of energy resources going forward and have tremendous advantages, especially if they are produced as green powerfuels. In addition, HT-PEM fuel cells have superior water management and heat management properties. Demand has been growing for our products, which are market-tested and already deployed.”
Advent markets its product line of fuel cells and MEAs for the HT-PEM market under the name Li.F.E. engines (Liquid Fuel Electrochemical Engines).
